Antique French Saint Esprit Pendant, 18k yellow gold
A lovely antique French Auvergne jewel called "Holy Spirit" (Saint Esprit) pendant which started to appear in the 17th century but became popular around the 19th. It is set in 18k yellow gold with red foiled citrines, and decorated in white and light green enamel.
It is traditionally given as betrothal gift by husbands to their future brides. This pendant is usually worn with a gold chain or velvet link, for special occasions. The white enameled part represents a dove (symbol of the holy spirit). Doves in weddings are ancient symbols that still last until today, as they represent purity, peace and faith.
