Antique Magnifying Glass with repoussé detailing
An antique Georgian working magnifying glass, also called as a quizzing glass. The handle is with repoussé details and it swivels. Its designed such that one can make this as a pendant, worn with a longer chain. While this is not solid gold, the quality of antique gold is just superb as the yellow colour holds even after 100 years. A repoussé technique is used in designing metals by using a hammer/tool to create a relief from the back or inside, resulting in a raised design. Gold-cased is another term for rolled gold, a long lasting form of plating. The process for rolled gold was invented in Birmingham in 1785 and was to be further developed in Birmingham over the next decades. It was a popular method in Victorian and Georgian era, where a material of a base metal covered by mechanical means with a shell or covering of gold to effectively protect the underlying base metal from the action of pure nitric acid.
